Together Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

We present a test for long-term couples who enjoy horror films: Sit down with your loved one and view Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. At first glance, it may seem like typical physical horror, but within Together resides a intense contemplation about our choices in loving one another.

An Introductory Film Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together marks the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for over ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a unique chemistry to their roles, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The plot begins when Tim and Millie relocate from the urban environment to the countryside for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical story element, of course, but that’s primarily where the tropes conclude. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While walking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim discover an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity begins influencing the duo. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a methodically building horror experience, interspersing moments of dreamlike terrors, gross (but tastefully done) body horror, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes during something horrific). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together seamlessly and presents them in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and removed from his social circle. He fears the idea of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie refrains from painting one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

Both characters confront the sort of issues that are inherent in any relationship after ten years. Fundamentally, they still love one another. They share moments of joy, offer support, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these fears of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the metaphor never feels overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama serve the other symbiotically.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. Accounts suggest that single viewers have seen the movie as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Conversely, some couples experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the finale inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your significant other and state, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu at present.
